Named after a friend of the Enaren family who died tragically during the Dominion occupation of Betazed, Okalan has never let either this heritage nor his position in one of the Ruling Houses bother him in the least.

Okalan joined Starfleet in 2397 and soon made a name for himself as an expert for Vulcanoids - his papers on Vulcan hybrids not only frequently cite the legendary Dr Leonard McCoy, but are in fact often mentioned in the same breath.

Keeping with his role-model's tradition, he seems to enjoy a love/hate relationship with the objects of his expertise.
Okalan's answer to "Why specialize in Vulcanoids?" is "They're nothing but trouble, I grant you that. But - once one bothers to look closer - they're generally worth it. And who can resist them ears?"
