As a cadet, he was assigned to the USS Saladin. He also served upon the Thunderchild and the Defender before being transferred unexpectedly to the Charon.

			Waqas Jilani was born on Parapet IV, though the world itself may be loathe to admit it. By the standards of the one of the last vestigial colonies in a failed and aborted attempt at establishing a new Islamic empire, his very birth was inauspicious. His father, Aamir Jilani, was appointment as an ambassador to the Federation, in order to negotiate a rare trade agreement between the reclusive colony and Starfleet. It was during this assignment that Aamir Jilani met and fell in love with Lieutenant Cybele Knight.

			Their marriage lasted two years and was exceedingly unhappy. It resulted in a divorce…and, of course, a baby boy. Eventually, Aamir Jilani remarried and had three more children. Cybele Knight, now an Admiral in Starfleet, also had two daughters of her own. As his parents began immersed in the call of their careers and new homes, Waqas drifted.

			He ran away from home at the age of thirteen. Two years later, he was arrested as the member of a pirate crew. He spent a year on Delta IV and a couple of years on Risa engaged in the…more exotic pleasures those planets have to offer. At age eighteen, he was arrested again, this time for trafficking in illegal substances.

			With the promise of getting this criminal record expunged, Waqas returned to school. When he was twenty-three, he graduated from the Vulcan Institute of Sciences with a degree in psychology. For a year he traveled again to the border worlds on the Federation, only to return and apply for admission to Starfleet.

			== Personality Profile ==

			With his deep eyes and quick smile, Waqas Jilani is all charm and wit. There is a refinement about him and a love for fine things. However, everything, even decadence, bores him quickly and he becomes anxious for the next challenge. His mind is always searching for something more, as if there is something out that that will complete him.

			He makes friends quickly, though he reveals little of himself in the process. Almost all his relationships with women are shallow and merely physical. He remains out of contact with his family, having been shunned by his father and ignored his mother. If Waqas Jilani is capable of true love, there has been little indication of it so far.

			He remains, however, an excellent counselor, capable of expressing deep empathy and holding back all judgment. It appears that whatever scars his travels have given him, he has gained with them the ability to understand the pain of others and, through his training, also has the means of helping them to alleviate that pain. No one, after all, is more comfortable in the dark than one knows blindness.
