Biography

The younger of Estin and Jared Lapiz's identical twin daughters, Melia was always referred to as “the clever one”. It was not that she was shy and bookish, rather that she observed that she would achieve no recognition at home for activities her parents did not perceive as being 'intelligent'. Meanwhile, Melia’s sister, Zilia played up to her own epithet of “the pretty one” and was soon on her way to becoming one of Trill’s leading performing artistes.

The relationship between the sisters was tense and jealous – a factor that never seemed to concern their parents. Years later Melia would reflect that Estin and Jared only saw the motivation to succeed and excel that the rivalry spurred, but at the time it led to a deep rooted and bitter mistrust of Zilia, who, as Melia noted was no more blessed with charm or beauty than she.

Later, that tension developed into something more serious. Melia delayed informing her family that her application to the Symbiosis Committee had been accepted so that the announcement coincided with Zilia’s debut in a lead role in Leran Manev. This attempt to manipulate her parents emotions had long reaching consequences – Zilia severed all contact with her sister and both Estin and Jared, in Melia’s opinion, at least took her side. It was with relief that a month later Melia became an initiate.

Without her shadow Melia thrived at the institute making friends with both fellow initiates and staff – most notably she became close to Vanez Krah, a family friend, who in her old age provided counselling services for initiates. Melia’s studies focussed on the dynamics of the living and she was delighted to be offered a place at the Kem'alta Institute where she specialised in the study of Xenobiology, and Immunology.

Graduating in the highest percentage of her class Melia chose to research rather than practice medicine and in 2396, less than two weeks after graduation accepted a post as Research Fellow at the Darwin Genetic Research Station on Gagarin IV. Her work here was classified.

In 2399 Melia Lapiz was joined with the Krah symbiont, whose previous host Vanez had sponsored her application to the Symbiosis commission. Melia Krah, as she became, sought to put aside the differences with her sister and her family and as part of the process reassessed her life. Eventually in 2400 she resigned from her lucrative research post and enrolled in the Starfleet Medical Academy then in 2403 was awaiting her first assignment.
