Janus VI, also known as Shaul is a Class F planet in the Janus (a class G4V star) system and homeworld of the silicon-based Horta.

History

Janus VI was colonized by the United Federation of Planets some fifty years prior to 2267, after exploatory parties had determined the planet to be rich in resources such as pergium, platinum, sirium, gold, and uranium.

Since Janus VI was geologically inactive and had no atmosphere, the mining colony was established underground. Though mining was difficult with the standard technology of the time, by 2265 the Janus VI colony was a major producer of pergium for the Federation.

The Federation was unaware of the Horta civilisation on the planet, until in 2267 new levels of the mines were opened and the miners inadvertently destroyed thousands of Horta eggs in the Vault of Tomorrow, mistaking them for nothing other than silicon nodules. The Horta began to sabotage the mining equipment and attack the miners in response. In three months fifty miners were killed and a distress signal was sent out. The USS Enterprise came to assist the planet and, following a mind meld between Commander Spock and the mother Horta, the situation was eventually resolved with Horta and Federation personnel agreeing to live and work side by side.

Mining facilities ca. 2267

The Human-Horta mining alliance of Janus VI became one of the most productive and profitable operations in the know galaxy, sourcing raw ore and rare elements to the entire Federation.

The planet became a full-fledge member of the Federation in the early 24th century, with its own seat on the Federation Council.

The current representative to the Federation Council is Sanaht
