The second oldest in a family of four, Matthew has had more than his share of adventures, foul-ups and other problems. Things were good for him until he entered Starfleet Academy. He wasn't really used to getting his own way all the time, but the instructors at the Academy were demanding. So demanding in fact that one of his instructors contacted Matthew's uncle Jonathan to see if something could be done about his problem nephew. Jonathan said "No problem. I'll invite him for a visit." The visit was nice and short and a small device was implanted in Matthew's head that essentially blocked previous memories and replaced them with replicated images of a past he never had. The instructors noticed an instant change in Matthew and soon began to like him.

In 2398, after graduation from the Academy, Matthew was bounced from one ship to another over the course of six months. And he was bounced from position to position. Finally, after almost six months on the Intrepid, Matthew was given orders to report to Starbase Arcadia as the Chief Medical Officer. Things were fine on the Intrepid until the summer of 2399 when he was busted from Lieutenant to Lieutenant Junior Grade by the new Starfleet Commander, among with several other well respected officers in Starfleet.

Later that summer, Matthew was transferred to Trilista Colony where he stayed there for close to a year. In the summer of 2400, after an attempt on his life and the life of his family, Matthew was moved to Starbase Versailles. After the occupation of the station, Matthew was ordered to go to the U.S.S. Intrepid as the JAG Officer. Not even five days into his tenure on the Intrepid, he was ordered to go back to Earth for training and then ship out to the U.S.S. Defender.
