History

Based on the 20th to 22nd century (Federation Standard) design of Vulcan starships, Seleya is the first of a new class of multi-purpose science and exploration vessels commissioned by the Vulcan Science Academy.

When a radical new engine design proposed by the Academy's Chief Designer and Engineer T'Meni in YS 8996 proved unworkable with contemporary ships, the engineers discovered that the warp fields generated by earlier Vulcan designs were within the parameters for the new engine. Consequently, the old design with a circular nacelle was used as a template and the first simulations proved promising. However, similar to the troubles Stafleet encountered with the early Defiant-class ships, the sheer power output proved a great strain on the original design.

After a decade of designing a modern vessel based on classic principles a workable solution was found, and the keel for Seleya was flown at Vulcana Regar.

Intended primarily as a mid-range explorer and science vessel, the Seleya-class was from the beginning designed to be highly adaptable, and only minor refits are required to allow her to serve as a search-and-rescue craft, a carrier vessel, or even a swift, light combat cruiser.

As the first of her class, the VSS Seleya was equipped with a range of sensors newly developed by the Academy, making her near a rival of the Starfleet Luna-class with 17 sensor pallets (3 high power pallets) and independent subspace graviton field-current scanners. Another improvement of the Seleya class are ECM resilient sensors, which make her able to operate within particle flux nebulae.

Her fifty-seven percent improved power generation compared to other vessels her size allowed for some extravagant additions (in a Utopia Planitia engineer's words "The Vulcans have gone space-happy") such as retractable hull armor, an independent long range communications array and high resolution sensor beams, as well as a state of the art astrometrics lab and a medical bay with adjacent research facilites.

Seleya also carries a small number of support craft, mainly D'Mikat-class shuttles, but has ample room for D'Vahl type fighters as well.

VSS Seleya was launched YS 9013. Since then, her missions have included search-and-rescue, exploration, scientfic surveys, scouting, and occasional combat support.

Starfleet has shown some interest in the design, however one prominent engineer has stated that "The girl is as short-tempered as a Romulan, ruthlessly logical as a Vulcan, and as unforgiving as either, and I don't know which is worse."
