The Danteri ruled the planet of Xenex for over 300 years without being able to quell an uprising until M'k'n'zy of Calhoun led an uprising to free his people in the year 2348 which ran until 2353 where the planet of Xenex was freed and became and independent government. Danteri atrocities included killing unborn children, burning villages, and the laser removal of petty criminals' limbs. The Federation eventually mediated the peace treaty between the two worlds. Tentative first contact between the Federation and Xenex was made before the M'k'n'zy-led rebellion. However, after the uprising, the Federation took a greater interest in the affairs of Xenex and established an embassy which is still in negotiations with the Xenexian people about membership to the Federation to this date. Xenex, a planet orbiting a lone star, located in the general vicinity of sector 221, in a star system near the edge of Danteri and Thallonian controlled space is where Q`e`ni`n of Calhoun was born in the town of Calhoun in 2375 to tailor-business owning parents, D`s’ira and S`am`l.
Q`e`ni`n attended local schools and performed reasonably well but spent most of his time in his parents outbuilding tinkering with engines and anything technical that he could get his hands on. By the age of twelve he could build a basic remote control starship with a more primitive version of impulse power which he then sold to other children to earn more money for his parents whose business was suffering due to the economic crisis on the planet. At a very young age, Q`e`ni`n was diagnosed with Shalaft's Syndrome, a rare congenital defect that left him hypersensitive to any kind of sound. His condition was treated, but his hearing was still highly acute and as such he could notice subtleties as faint as a starship's torque sensors out of alignment by three microns which impressed the engineering staff he met when an Intrepid Class was landing on the planet surface on the Embassy launch pad. It was because of this that at the age of eighteen Q`e`ni`n was hired by the Federation embassy as maintenance staff working predominately on the shielding network that protected the building and the LCARS servers within. Working as a civilian engineer he took his orders from Lieutenant Commander Ralph Morson who was an esteemed Starfleet engineer that fuelled within Q`e`ni`n a desire to work on Starships. Learning as much as he could about warp systems, starship design and anything else he could he was sponsored by the embassy to enter into Starfleet Academy in an attempt to forge better relations between Xenex and the Federation as he was one of a small group of Xenexian’s that were in Starfleet. The most notable of these was M'k'n'zy of Calhoun (Mackenzie Calhoun), former Commanding Officer of the USS Excalibur.
Q`e`ni`n of Calhoun followed a similar path and adopted the name Quentin Calhoun and was admitted onto an engineering course at San Francisco on Earth. His parents had mixed feelings about this, his mother was immensely proud but his father was disappointed that his son was becoming ‘one of them’, since that day Quentin has kept in close contact with his mother but has become increasingly estranged from his father. While at the academy Quentin took up the sport of fencing, in particular the epée which he became very adapt at and enjoyed the sport as a refreshing break from the engineering work thus keeping his mind sharp. On arriving at the Academy Quentin was housed in the Gold Wing of the Campus along with three other cadets in a shared house. He shared the house with Martin Raines an aspiring Security Officer, Danni Richards, a medical orientated Cadet and Jane Seymour whose interest lay firmly in Science. As the only non-human member of the house Quentin found it difficult to accustom himself but it wasn’t long before Martin and Quentin gelled because they were both keen fencers, often seen putting on a display for the other cadets outside their building. The household was a friendly one full of Cadets destined to go far with their careers. All of them finishing every mock and final exam in the top quarter. In the First Year at the Academy John and his three friends all took the same basic training courses which all potential officers must pass to get onto the second year of training.
The modules were:
- Federation History
- Starfleet History
- Federation Law including General Orders
- Federation Cultures
- Star Ship Engineering
- Basic Science
- Basic Astronomy
- Basic Weapons Training
- Basic Flight Training
- Physical Training
After this basic year Quentin, along with his friends had to choose the specialisation that they wanted a career in and complete five core modules then five option specific modules to the specialisation of their choice.
The core modules were:
- Advanced Science
- Advanced Astronomy
- Physical Training
- Borg and Non UFP Culture Studies
- Diplomacy Training
The Engineering Stream module options were:
- Propulsion Systems and Warp Drives
- Computer Systems and Maintenance
- Diagnostics and Statistical Analysis
- Repairs, Enhancements and Subsystems
- Warp Factors and Warp Fields
While in his second year Quentin also took a number of extra modules that would give him marks in the top 1% guaranteeing him a place on the elite Red Squadron Academy Training Program. The three extra modules he took were:
- Transwarp Theory and Practise
- Weapons Technologies (Alien and Federation)
- Engineering Operations in Combat
In the third and fourth year Quentin took on the role of Red Squadron Engineer as appointed by the programs Directors – in this role he was able to spend his third year learning in more depth and with more practical sessions the way in which engineering officers commanded the department and worked in the field. He was given the Chief engineering post onboard the Red Squadron Sabre Class vessel, the USS Valiant-G, which was mentored by Commander Richard Jackson – one of the Red Squadron Program Deputy Directors. While on the programme Quentin learnt more about Engineering Officers and how to run the department as well as learning more about the mechanical workings of Starships. Quentin spent most of his time studying, fencing or tinkering with shuttlecraft and warp manifolds that the engineering school kept for practise purposes. Also in his final year at the Academy Quentin achieved the record for the fasted engine overhaul and rebuild in a shuttlecraft in a record time of two and half hours being the previous winner by a mere ten minutes.
Graduating in the top three per-cent Quentin was promoted to the rank of ensign and assigned to the Akira class starship, the USS Premonition as an assistant engineer. Given early responsibility on the neutral zone patrol assignment Quentin was responsible for torpedo launcher maintenance and testing, duties which he performed well during a small fire fight between the Premonition and a bandit ship using the neutral zone as a smuggling corridor. After the routine patrols were over The Premonition was sent on a five year exploration mission of the Delta Quadrant where it charted several of the races that the USS Voyager had encountered decades before as well as encountering new ones. On one trade assignment Quentin was assigned to the repair team tasked with fixing a Talaxian freighter in return for plasma conduits which had blown out during a systems malfunction. Towards the end of the mission the Premonition was caught unawares and attacked by a Borg Sphere which caused massive damage to the ship and killed numerous staff including the ships Chief Engineer. In the ensuing battle Quentin lead a team over to the Sphere and infected the computer systems with a program developed by the Anti-Borg Unit in Starfleet Security. On returning the Premonition he worked round the clock to ensure that shields were repaired and restored for fear of another possible attack. It was at this point that Quentin was given the Chief Engineer post and the Premonition continued on an extended mission spending a full ten years in deep space before returning to Starbase 876 in 2408.
After an upgrade of ship class to a Sovereign, the USS Premonition A was commissioned to be sent to the front lines of the second Dominion War that broke out across the Federation. Being sent through the Bajoran Wormhole the Premonition along with the rest of Task Group 3.8 stood their ground in the Battle of New Bajor. As Chief Engineer onboard the Premonition Quentin applied what he had learnt in the combat engineering course at the Academy to successfully keep the ship working as well as possible during the battle. After the war was won the Premonition was decommissioned and recently promoted Lieutenant Commander Quentin Calhoun was assigned to the brand new Luna class starship to run the engineering department, an exciting challenge as it was a class new to Starfleet.
