Desert Sehlat

Often referred to as "Vulcan Teddy bear", the sehlat is perhaps the most widely known animal inhabitant of that world - and the least understood.

Though at first glance this mass of fur and muscle indeed resembles a terran grizzly (admittedly one with six inch fangs and bobcats in their family tree), and the sehlat holds the same omnivorous niche as the bear, it is also a pack animal known to have strong family ties.

The domesticated sehlat stands roughly 1.5 to 1.7 meters tall at the shoulders, with fur color ranging from gold and reddish brown to gray or even black. This lustrous coat serves both as insulation from the planet's heat and a good protection from poisonous insect or scorpion bites.

There are two types of wild sehlat - the desert dwellers, hunting alone or in small packs, usually more stocky and lighter than their domesticated cousins, and the magnificent thin coated Sehlat of Tat'Sahr and T'Ralor. Since the latter live in Vulcan's small temperate zone they tend to be larger and by all accounts lazy vegetarians or scavengers, leaving the occasional biped unmolested as long as they are shown the same courtesy.

Vulcans have long considered the sehlat a sentient species in their own right, albeit of a significantly different kind. It is therefore not quite correct to refer to a sehlat living with Vulcans as a pet but rather a part of the clan, since it is not only free to leave should it so choose but is treated with the respect and consideration accorded an adopted family member.
