Kaen's family left Cardassia shortly after the Dominion war and settled on an outpost in Alpha Centauri. Kaen's father provided strategic analysis about Cardassia for Starfleet and the Federation and eventually served in the cabinets of two Federation presidents helping to influence the Federation's Cardassian policy.
When he was born Kaen attended a private school in the Alpha Centauri system that was rich with diversity. He excelled in his studies, especially that of mixed martial arts. After he graduated from the Academy he was accepted into the Starfleet Academy campus in Alpha Centauri and later transffered to San Francisco where he completed his training in Station and Vessel Security.
