Male and female Jarel

A horse-like animal native to Vulcan, roughly resembles a scimitar horned oryx with elements of terran desert dwelling equines. Mostly of pale white coloring with golden brown or amber markings, domesticated Jarel were used as riding beasts throughout Vulcan history though the practice has become fairly rare in modern times. National parks such as T'Ralor and Nal'Shin employ mounted rangers for difficult search and rescue missions and some Clans still afford the traditional honor guard for ceremonial purposes.

Jarel usually travel in herds and can be found on the continents of Na'Nam and Han'Shir. Their preferred habitat is the savannah-like zones of Kir and Khomi and southern Go'an, although a small population has persisted in the rough climate of the Viltan Flats. Jarel can survive without water for many weeks, because their kidneys prevent loss of water from urination and they can modify their body temperature to avoid perspiration.

Wild Jarel stand on average 1.3 meters at the shoulder and weigh between 150 and 220 kilograms. The domesticated Jarel has been bred for increased strength without losing its extraordinary speed. Most have an average shoulder height of 1.5 to 1.6 meters and are capable of carrying a full grown Vulcan and a modest amount of equipment for long distances.

Domesticated Jarel

Historically the Jarel has taken the same position in ancient Vulcan society as the horses or camels of terran desert tribes. Often seen as a prized possesion and sign of wealth, a favored Jarel would often be adorned with elaborate saddles and colorful bridles.

While for the most part the Jarel's role in ancient Vulcan warfare was that of light cavalry, archaeological digs have unearthed skeletons of a by now extinct type of a heavy-set Jarel and complete sets of armor.
