Biography

Born and raised on the shipping freighter Cornerbrook, Terrence Connelly was one of a dying breed, humans who lived their whole lives in space as a merchant marine. His mother, a sickly nameless young girl who was a product of a poor colony world's social system, died soon after childbirth thanks to complications and generally poor health. The ship's crew figured her strength was channeled into her son, who came into the world loud and strong. In the long trip before reaching a port, the crew grew to love the baby Connelly, who's name was chosen through a ship's contest. Officially adopted by the freighter Captain, he was essentially the ship's child. Each member of the freighter crew had a hand in raising the boy, and each took great pride in putting a bit of themselves in the lad.

Everything he learned, he picked up from being aboard ship and absorbing the world around him. The people and the ship were his teachers, and he proved to be an excellent student. Having spent nearly all his life aboard the Cornerbrook, he knew the vessel as good as any crew member by the time he was twelve, and upon his thirteenth birthday he was given an official position and job (as opposed to being an unofficial crew member).

As he grew older, he remained on the Cornerbrook, becoming more and more a key member of the crew. Eventually, he would stick mostly with Engineering, having been assigned there at the age of twenty two. They figured his intimate knowledge of the ship would prove most valuble as an engineer, and it would be his official position for some years to come.

Despite having met a wonderful woman, and marrying her, Connelly remained on the Cornerbrook with his new bride. Unwilling to depart the ship which he'd served and called him all his life, he didn't depart until forced to by the Captain and ship's company.

Electing to go into business himself, he purchased a small second hand ship, which he christianed the Shearwater. It was months before Connelly felt she was ready to work, but when they finally got started, she hummed like a dream. The ship carried his sweat and heart now, and she preformed like it was her first day out of drydock.

The Shearwater wasn't particularly big, and Connelly's business remained small scale, but it was enough for a small comfortable life. The Connelly's eventually started a family, with a set of twins (one boy, one girl). As the twins turned five, another child was expected and Connelly began to consider moving into bigger accomedations. They'd saved up some credits, and the family could certainly use the room.

They were about to finalize decisions to sell the Shearwater and purchase a larger ship, when the rumors came back.

The Cornerbrook, by now, was an old ship. She kept running because of the crew's stubborness and tender loving care. They refused to give up on the old lady, and despite her age, she remained a workhorse. It certainly wasn't a question of money, as by now, the dedication and reliability of the ship and crew had garnered them steady work.

But in a mysterious turn of events, the Cornerbrook failed to make a their delivery on time. In fact, the ship never made port, and wasn't heard of again. Disappered, somewhere in their cargo run, without a trace. Starfleet spent some weeks searching, but found nothing and declared the Cornerbrook lost.

Rumors were rampant that the Cornerbook finally gave out due to age, or that someone aboard had made a mistake. There was no talk of pirates or raids.. those days were long past, and the Cornerbrook hadn't taken a dangerous run in years.

Connelly didn't buy it. Living off savings, the Shearwater with family in tow went out to the last known position of the Cornerbrook and started a search of their own.

Almost half a year after the Cornerbrook was reported lost, Connelly was picked up in an emergency escape pod, alone. He refused to speak of the incident, and would only confirm the death of his family, and his ship. At the age of thirty eight, Terrance Connelly lost everything he knew and loved.

He drifted for some time, taking odd jobs and staying with old friends who'd served with him before. His life was aimless and without drive as he let the days slip past. Too proud and too much afraid of death, he couldn't bring himself to commit suicide. He couldn't even bring himself to take drugs, or go to therapy. Alcohol occasionally consoled him, but for the most part, he spent his time alone, in silence.

On his fourty fifth birthday, something made Connelly realize he'd grieved and wasted enough of his life. The years had tempered the pain of his loss, and he'd made the decision that he'd done enough moping around.

Penniless and long since out of touch with the basic fright shipping business, he searched for someway to turn his life around, and literally ran into a Starfleet recruiter, posting new recruiting information on a public information bulletin.

Despite being slightly out of practice, Connelly enlisted in Starfleet. Without a formal education, much less a degree, he agreed to Enlisted service, aiming for tactical and security. He was fascinated with science, but was never any good at it, and medicine was a hopeless cause. Engineering he knew, but he also wanted to try something new, so that left tactical and security.

Although older than everyone else on his Basic Training Course, Connelly held his own, graduating a respectable eighteenth in a class of fourty three.

Connelly's first assignment was to the USS Rodger Young, and though he didn't spend much time there, it was enough to see some action. Assigned to the Emergency Extraction Team in addition to his usual Master at Arms duties, Connelly was part of a deployment against the Bromistas, a group known for their trickery and deception.

The EET's mission into the Bromistas Asteroid was ultimately successful, but at the expense of some casualties to the team. Never the less, all mission objectives were achieved, and all personnel returned to the ship. For his part, Connelly was personally awarded with a Citation for Gallantry and a Fleet Commendation. The Roger Young was commended with a Polaron Burst. By the time Connelly left, only some short months later, he had been promoted from Crewman to Petty Officer 3rd Class.

After completing a few courses reflective of his rank and experiance (as well as lack of an awaiting active duty posting), Connelly was plucked out of obscurity by the Rodger Young's former commanding officer, Captain (later Commodore) Amaya Blaidd nee Yamamoto.

Now the Epsilon Fleet Commander, she got Connelly assigned to Epsilon's Executive Security Detail. Responsible for the protection and safety of the Fleet Commander and Deputy, Connelly would serve with the Detail during his entire stay with Epsilon Fleet Command.

The Fleet only saw one major action during that time, the Traxati Campaign. During which, the fleet was deployed in a large scale battle that resulted in the loss of many ships, including the Commodore's flagship. Before the call for abandon ship, Connelly had requested (and was granted) leave from his security post to assist in the damage control efforts.

Although his direct efforts were successful, the ship was ultimatly lost. For his part, Connelly would feel terrible having left his post beside the Commodore, regardless of what little good he did buying time for the evacuation. Nevertheless, Epsilon Fleet saw things differently, and Connelly was later awarded the Bronze Star for Valour for his actions.

Not long after, Connelly was promoted to Petty Officer 1st Class, and sent away again. Many of the Epsilon Staff and personnel has switched over after the Traxati campaign, and Connelly was one of them. Once again without a waiting assignment, Connelly found himself sent to yet again more schooling.

Completing number of courses, Connelly was assigned to the USS Cortez as a Master at Arms. Not long after arrival, the Cortez was ordered to assist in the creation of a colony on Alpha Virginis. While the mission appeared simple, it quickly grew complex as various colonists began to disappear. Coupled with the discovery of some previously unknown hostile species, the Security Department had it's hands full. Eventually, the colony was properly secured, and for their efforts, the security department was awarded with the Kragite of Heroism, with Chekov Cluster (for away team duties).

On her very next mission, transporting an Ambassador to Starbase 718, the crew was mysteriously kidnapped. Awaking in a strange place with no recollection of how they got there, various members of the crew were then taken away and sent into some sort of combat ring. Very soon, the crew discovered a number of other Starfleet personnel also kidnapped, as well as a wide variety of other races held captive for this strange combat. Despite limited food and water and a lack of medical supplies, the crew managed to survive. Eventually, they were all beamed back to the Cortez, as suddenly as when they had been taken.

While a member of security, Connelly was not sent into the ring to fight, but rather, was assigned as a combat trainer for those who might be sent into the ring. Although he was also later sent out on recon patrols, he would feel quite badly about not being sent out to fight, as he was a Master at Arms. Nevertheless, Connelly was awarded the Trafalger Award with Silver Cluster for his duty. Additionally, he also found himself promoted to Chief Petty Officer.

After a brief shore leave, the Cortez was dispatched to investigate what happened to the USS Luna, which had lost communications since investigating a mysterious cloud. Upon entering the cloud, the crew of the Cortez found themselves transformed into smaller, younger versions of themselves. In fact, they had kept their memories as they were, but found themselves in children's bodies. Connelly most certainly did not enjoy the experience, but it wasn't too long before the Science Department found a way to reverse effects.

Later, the Cortez would be sent to Artaan to investigate a potential disruption of the timeline via a reported portal. Upon arrival, the crew encountered various disapperances. Assigned to the investigation, Connelly attempted to connect the various disappearances and find out where they had all gone. Although not ultimatly successful, the Cortez would eventually manage to take care of things.

In something of a surprise, immediatly at the conclusion of the mission, the Cortez was decommissioned. Awarded for his service on the ship, Connelly was given a wide array of choices. After taking a bit of leave, Connelly would decide to take up an offer to return to his engineering roots.

Managing to avoid time in a classroom, Connelly was assigned as a Repair Specialist on the USS Destiny. Under orders to stop pirate attacks near Starbase Aurora, the Destiny embarked with the Aurora's fighters in an attempt to carry some extra firepower. Despite standing to a Captain's Mast, Connelly's performance was satisfactory as the Destiny and her temporary guests firmly halted pirate activity in the area by destroying the enemy base of operations.

Not long after, a young boy mysteriously appeared out of no where onboard the Destiny. Just as the senior staff managed to get a rough idea of who the boy was and how he arrived, the crew found itself transported in an instant off the Destiny. In unfamiliar surroundings, they eventually determined they'd arrived in an alternate reality, where the boy was originally from. In this world, the Destiny was a popular television show who's actor's were to be the guests of honour at a nearby convention. Connelly, along with Destiny's Chief Engineer Lt. (j.g) Aida Ishida, were tasked with creating a tricorder out of roughly 20th century Earth technology. After some close calls with security guards and zealous fans, the pair managed to complete a limited function tricorder and assist the crew in returning to their own reality.

By the time Connelly was cut new orders, he'd been awarded several times for both his engineering prowess and his bravery under fire. Unable to avoid additional training any longer, Connelly was sent to Starfleet Academy and assigned to complete the Senior NCO Qualification course - something he should have attained before, if not immediatly after, his promotion to Chief Petty Officer.

Other Notes

Personality:

To say Terrence Connelly is a bit rough around the edges is putting it lightly. He's certainly been around the block once or twice, and despite the rate on his collar, anyone can see it. Connelly seems like a pretty tough fella, your sterotypical enlisted man. Simple, gruff, but with a dedicated heart. He will certainly speak his mind, but he seems to know when to say something and picks his battles. His limited Starfleet service doesn't show, probably thanks to a life in space aboard ships. He isn't particularly chatty, but his words can be well chosen and to the point.

Connelly definitly has a low tolerence for bullshit, and he won't mind telling that to your face, but he'll get the job done regardless (if you ignore his muttered words). It's odd how sometimes the man seems not to care, but pours his heart out into his work.

One point to be warned about is his total unwillingness to talk about the events surrounding the loss of his family. He simply refuses to mention it or talk about it. The man most certainly needs treatment, but he stubbornly refuses it and gets almost violently so. But that's not to say he's a violent man.

Connelly isn't exactly a huggable teddy bear, but he's respected for his knowledge, dedicated hard work, and trustworthy reliability. It seems rare to see him smile or relax though.. he isn't exactly angry all the time, just not outwardly happy. Never one to hand out compliments, it's apparently an ongoing bet to see who can make him burst out laughing. His fellow enlisted recruits said they managed a few smirks, and one time a drunken grin, but that was it.

He seems to be quite the professional, even if he isn't particularly sociable. Overall, he is almost old fashioned in his personality. His muttered wisecracks and borderline cynicle comments are never totally out of line, and despite his rough exterior, he cuts through the touchy feely red tape and gets the job done.
