SB 18 is a Federation Starfleet base in the Hamal system.
Its stable population numbers about eight thousand sentients - crew on assignment and their dependents, as well as civilians on vacation since part of the base is a privately operated resort. In addition to the regular facilities for starship maintenance and refit SB 18 also houses a branch of Starfleet Academy, one of the largest libaries in the sector and lecture halls as well as a famous conference center.
From a distance the Hamalki designed and built (though 'knitted might be a better word) starbase appears a golden-tinged oblong, rounded at the ends like a cigar. Closer, the size becomes apparent as one can see the starships nested among the innumerable spires and struts and spikes of its outer surface.
The partially transparent, partially mirror-polished surface reflects the light of Alpha Arietis, giving the ensemble a golden appearance on the outside. The silver and gilt interior appears a tight fine mesh woven of threads of mirror-finish steel, but is actually crystal. From the interior surface substructures hang supported by cables or jut out on intricately shaped support poles.
The Starbase's office complexes are adaptable for the comfort of all known Federation species, and substructures can be knitted on demand for visiting dignitaries with specific environmental needs.
