Kayren'tu

From IRW Aylhr
Kayren'tu pack

A canid native to Vulcan, occasionally referred to as 'Vulcan Wolf'.

Nearly extinct four centuries ago, small populations survived in the T'Ralor nature preserve and the Tat'Sahr highlands. By now migrating packs have been seen as far south as Raal and Kir, while a repopulation effort in the Na'ree river valley has yielded promising results.

The species has likely evolved from the now extinct Krin-tu, though fossil records indicate both may in fact have a common ancestor. Drawings and legends of a jackal-like animal similar in stature point to another species which diverged from the ancient canids.

Adult kayren'tu measure roughly a meter in body length and 0.6 to 0.7 meters in height; and weigh up to 20 kilograms. They have short guard hairs and thick underfur, providing insulation against both heat and cold. Packs can number up to 15 animals of all ages, though a size of 5-7 is more common.

Highly efficient hunters capable of great endurance, the kayren'tu still doesn't say no to carrion or the odd bit of fruit to be had. Like many animals on the planet the species is highly specialized in water conservation and can subsist on the water contained in their prey for prolonged periods of time.
