Nikolai joined Starfleet on his eighteenth birthday. It was a proud day for the Russian's family considering he was following in the footsteps of every male member of his family dating back to the foundation of Starfleet. Nikolai wanted to follow in his father's footsteps and join the Quantico training academy for Starfleet Marines.

Taking the ASVAP test he scored in the top one percent of all students from earth and was quickly accepted into the Marines. Though his marks were high enough to get into Officers Candidates School from the very beginning he chose to enlist as a foot soldier. He quickly passed the insanely tough courses for the Marines and was spotted as a possible recruit for the newly founded and secretive Starfleet Special Forces division.

Upon graduating he received his orders to serve aboard the USS Saratoga of the newly founded Omega Fleet. Serving as a gunners mate at first on board Nikolai was taken under the wing of one of the SSF agents on board and taught how to be a very dangerous commando. Also during this time he met the woman who would become his wife, Lance Corporal Arie Tristis.

A year after joining the Saratoga's crew Nikolai and Arie were married by the General who commanded the vessel. Their life was relatively peaceful until the encounter with the Borg in the Delta Quadrant. Both Nikolai and Arie were wounded during the pitched battle and the Saratoga itself was nearly hulled. Once they arrived back in the Alpha Quadrant all of the wounded crew were removed from the derelict vessel to starbase 202.

Six months later Nikolai was cleared to report to a new station on the Kiev as the Platoon leader for the vessel. Unfortunately Arie was not transferred but stayed on board the Starbase with Nikolai's parents, this was to be the last time he would ever see any of them. After leaving onboard the Kiev to their assignment the galaxy was shocked by the Romulan Star Empire.

A Cowardly sneak attack on Starbase 202 was launched by the empire. Arie and Nikolai's family having been in the Marine Corps rushed to the station's defense. They fought valiantly but were ultimately killed in the ensuing battle by the superior Romulan forces. Nikolai was devastated by this news and requested a transfer to a front line vessel, Not only to defend the Federation but to enact revenge upon the Romulans for the butcher of his family.

After the war Nikolai buried his family at his ancestral plot in Russia, And after a brief time mourning rejoined the Marine Corps. His next assignment came under Colonel Cole onboard the newly commissioned USS Charon. At first he was pleased with the position under the Colonel, then he learned whom he was to be calling captain. His new posting was rife with sabotage attempts and hatred for the uppity Romulan filth that was parading around in a Star Fleet uniform tarnishing it's proud colors. The loyal and wise Colonel Cole decided enough was enough and for the greater good of Star Fleet lead a mutiny against the Romulan infiltrator. Nikolai was one of the first to join the cause with his fellow marines. However it was not to be. The crafty Romulan scum managed to turn the formerly faithful crew of the Charon against their would be liberators and subdued the Marine unit.

Nikolai was imprisoned along with the rest of the loyal members of the Charon but the Romulan knew she couldn't keep them locked up for the entire two year mission. So showing her true colors she marooned the entire corps on a Romulan Outpost, that is when things went even more terribly wrong. The Romulans and the vile NeoDyne Corporation took the Marines Prisoner for use in their corporations dark and sinister experiments.
