Vra'alen

From IRW Aylhr
Vra'alen in Northern Shi'Al

A medium-sized, antelope-like animal native to Tat'Sahr and northern Shi'Al.

The vra'alen stands about 1 m high at the shoulder and weighs around 60-70 kg. Their lifespan is roughly 30 to 40 years.

Excellently adapted to desert as well as low grasslands, the animals rest during the heat of the day and will graze or migrate from evening to late morning. The vra'alen is famous for its ability to detect rainfall and entire herds will move towards the new plant growth, meaning they have extensive ranges; a herd in the Cheleb-Kor region can range over 2,000 square kilometers. Herds are of mixed sex and usually contain between two and 15 animals, though herds of up to 50 animals have been reported.

Vra'alen prefer gravel, desert, or hard sand, where their speed and endurance will protect them from most predators. Their diet consist mainly of grasses such as dun-yar, but they will eat a large variety of vegetation, including shrubs, buds, herbs, fruit, tubers and roots.

A favorite in many ancient Vulcan tales as 'harbingers of rain' and swift nightly shadows, the vra'alen are depicted in many works of art.
